Ford y block timing marks. The timing mark on a y block should be for number one. No other marks or anything you kinnda gotta guess it and tune by ear. Also a light film of breaker point grease should be applied to the eight sided cam or rubbing block when the points are serviced.
My flathead ford tune up chart says to adjust timing until pinning dissapears for the earlier stuff and y blocks arent too much better. The 292 in my old edsel had absolutely no marks on the balancer anywhere. I sanded it cleaned it wire brushed it and did everything but run my tongue along the surface.

Timing is set at 3 degrees before tdc idle mixture was set up with a vacuum guage and with the distributor vacuum advance connected to the timed vacuum port on the passenger side. The set up he describes isnt what ive found looking at the timing marks of various late 50s y block fords with a dial back timing light. The timing marks for the crank is installed paralell to the ground and facing the steering box.
The marks on the y block timing gears aim toward the oil filter side with 12 pins between them. Another of the idiosyncrasies in the y block engine series and for some the most challenging is the manner in which the camshaft and crankshaft timing gears are aligned when the timing chain is installed. Two things will correct this time the motor with a vacuum gauge or send the damper to the damper dudes to get it rebuilt.
They do not face each other like any other small blockbig block ford or chevrolet. It appears that ford used 2 different thickness thrust washers and plates on the cam.
